There is no more competitive area of the current automotive industry than the segment that contains the Mazda CX-5 and its many strong rivals. For the current model year, Mazda has made a few subtle but important upgrades to its most popular crossover SUV with improved noise reduction, advanced safety systems that are standard equipment across the entire trim ladder as well as a reshuffled menu of standard and available equipment. All of that will make a comparison of the 2020 Mazda CX-5 vs. 2020 Honda CR-V all the more important to people looking to wade into the deep end of crossover SUVs. The 2020 Mazda CX-5 is more than competitive against a well-regarded opponent like the current Honda CR-V by doing a lot of things well without placing too much emphasis on any one area.

Every version of the 2020 Mazda CX-5 available at the Compass Mazda uses the same basic equipment for its powertrain. The standard power plant is a naturally aspirated version of the SKYACTIV®-G 2.5-liter, four-cylinder engine that will produce 187 horsepower and 186 pound-feet of torque. However, the Mazda CX-5 can also be equipped with a turbocharged version of that same engine that will make 227 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque. If that isn’t enough performance, the owner of a 2020 Mazda CX-5 can fill the crossover SUV’s tank with 93-octane fuel (or higher) and achieve 250 horsepower and 320 pound-feet of torque. Both Mazda engine variations will employ a six-speed automatic transmission.
All 2020 Honda CR-V models use a turbocharged 1.5-liter, four-cylinder engine that is mated to continuously variable transmission. It will produce 190 horsepower and 179 pound-feet of torque.
Both the 2020 Mazda CX-5 and 2020 Honda CR-V have two rows of seat that will be able to safely transport up to five passengers. When passengers are employing the backseat in the 2020 Mazda CX-5, there will still be a very respectable 30.9 cubic-feet of cargo volume. Folding that rear-most row away will open up 59.6 cubic-feet of cargo volume. While the 2020 Honda CR-V does offer a bit more cargo space with either configuration, drivers are going to have to account for those bigger dimensions while trying to find parking or maneuvering in tight quarters.
Customers choosing any available 2020 Mazda CX-5 at the Compass Mazda showroom will have access to the automaker’s touchscreen-based infotainment system. However, if they are looking for smartphone integration (Apple CarPlay® or Android Auto™), they will have to pick the Touring trims and higher. Similarly, the 2020 CR-V only makes this corresponding capability available above its entry-level trim grade as well.
