What Are the Different Types of Hybrid Cars?

As mentioned above, the definition of a hybrid car is a vehicle whose powertrain features an electric motor and gas engine. The motor and engine work together to offer drivers the most fuel efficiency possible. Before choosing your next hybrid vehicle, it’s good to know more about the different types of hybrid models, which you can further explore below.

Parallel Hybrid

This is the most common hybrid vehicle available, and it means that the car has an electric motor and gas engine that’s connected to the same automatic, manual, or CVT transmission. They blend their two power sources to make the vehicle move forward.

Series Hybrid

Series hybrid vehicles also have electric motors that are paired with a gas engine. The difference is that the electric motors are directly paired with the transmission, but it’s the sole power source for the vehicle. The gas engine acts as a generator for the electric motor and provides power to the gas engine.

Plug-In Hybrid

Similar to a parallel hybrid, a plug-in hybrid has both the electric and gas engine connected to the transmission. However, plug-in hybrids are special in that they have increased battery packs and can drive farther on electric motors alone. If you mostly drive short distances, you can drive on pure electric power alone. Then, come home and plug the hybrid vehicle in to recharge the battery packs. If you ever run out of electric range, the gas engine kicks in and acts as if you’re driving a conventional parallel hybrid vehicle.
