A common question we’re asked at Compass Mazda is, “What country is Mazda made in?” The main Mazda manufacturing plant is in Fuchu, Aki District, Hiroshima Prefecture, Japan. However, Mazda models are made in several different places, including North America. Dive into Mazda’s history and find out where your favorite Mazda models are from with Compass Mazda, below. While you’re here, be sure to check out our new vehicle specials!

Who Owns Mazda?

The Mazda Motor Corporation was founded in 1920 in Hiroshima, Japan. Mazda first got its start in 1920, producing three-wheeled motorcycles called “Autorickshaws.” These three-wheeled carts quickly gained popularity after becoming a key part of Mazda-sponsored events at the time. It wasn’t until 1940 that Mazda produced its first passenger vehicle. As the demand for affordable vehicles rose, Mazda started compiling designs for more compact cars, trucks, and three-wheeled vehicles, leading to the iconic Mazda rotary engine development.

What Country is Mazda Made In?

So, where is your Mazda from? There are currently three manufacturing facilities are in Japan: two are in Hiroshima, Japan, and the other is in Hofu, Japan. However, some Mazda models are produced in North American facilities: the Auto Alliance International facility in Flat Rock, Michigan, and the Kansas City assembly plant in Claycomo, Missouri. Take a look at where specific Mazda models are manufactured below:

  • Mazda3 Models: Mazda3 models are manufactured at the Japan facility in Hofu, Yamaguchi, Japan. However, the Hiroshima plants produce the engine and transmission.
  • Mazda6 Models: The Mazda6 is produced by two North American facilities co-owned by Ford. One is in Flat Rock, Michigan and the other is in Claycomo, Missouri.
  • Mazda5 Minivan, Mazda CX-5, MX-5 Roadster, RX-8: Like most Mazda performance models, these models are produced in the Hiroshima facility in the Miyoshi ward.
  • Mazda SUVs and Sedans: Mazda’s Japanese plants produce the rest of the lineup.
